Raf' al-Malamm 'an al-A'immat al-'Alam (Removing Blame from the Distinguished Imams) is a much needed contribution to the corpus of Islamic literature in English. Although opposition to taqlid (uncritical imitation) of the Four Imams and their respective Schools has dwindled somewhat, there are still substantial numbers of people who insist that it is inappropriate. The adoption of a legal school by the learned community is a tradition that is almost as old as Islam's history, and since the major opponents of taqlid are usually deep admirers of Shaykh Ahmad ibn Taymiyya, it seems most appropriate to share with them what the shaykh himself has the say about the subject and how he reconciles between Imams' views and the sound traditions their views apparently conflict with at times.
